Franciscans greet one another with pax et bonum, peace and all good, and the Tau is that greeting cast in metal, the emblem St. Francis took for his own after hearing Pope Innocent III speak of it. Given at a Confirmation or added quietly to a friend's bracelet, it carries the wish without needing a word.
